Refurbishment of Modissa clothing store
The refurbishment of the famous Modissa clothing store in Zurich was highly challenging, from the planning stage through to installation. Construction work began in August 2014. Due to the tight completion deadline, the firms involved had to ensure that all coordination and logistics exercises were carefully planned. Architects Matteo Thun & Partners were commissioned for the refurbishment.
The clothing store features a new, architectural bronze mullion-transom façade that runs along the lower two floors. With glass-only joints in place of profiles, the façade is an architectural eye-catcher in a prominent location. A special structure was needed for the curved section so that the building could retain its original layout. These exceptional circumstances also called for special planning: Krapf AG installed the glass panes at night, which meant closing off a section of the Uraniastrasse.
Elektrochromic glass
Electrochromic (or "smart") glass is used in the façade from the second to fifth floors. This special glass product eliminates the need for external shading and makes it possible to retain the building's existing appearance. The electrochromic glass may be tinted to various degrees electronically and allows an unobstructed view to the outside at all times. The glass was specially delivered from the USA.
No sills and 100% impermeable
The new rooftop restaurant on the sixth floor is a real gem. Guests can dine outdoors on its large terrace while enjoying views over the city of Zurich. The air-lux glazing in architectural bronze with automated, frameless sliding windows ensures a smooth transition from the interior to the terrace. Thanks to a sill-free design, the air-lux sliding windows are barrier-free, and the patented inflatable-seal technology makes them 100% impermeable.
